Raccoon Jacket Instruction Alternative
These instructions are meant to augment the instructions found in Interweave Knits Spring 2003 and offer an alternative sleeve. Bear in mind that you start the increasing at the same time you start working the short row shaping:

SLEEVES

With A cast on 54 (58, 62, 66) sts. Work in seed st for 4 rows.

Lower Right Chevron
(Short row shaping)

Next row (RS) Work 27 (29, 31, 33) sts in st st, W&T. Place stitch marker and work back to end of row.
Next row (RS) Work to 1 st before marker in st st, W&T, work back to start of row.
Next row (RS) Work to 2 sts before marker in st st, W&T, work back to start of row.

Continue in this manner, wrapping and turning 1 st further from the center marker each RS row and working back to the outer edge of the row until only 2 sts rem to be worked at start of row.

AT THE SAME TIME (meaning, at the same time that you are doing the short row shaping...)

Work 0 (6, 6, 4) rows in st st, then inc 1 st at start of row every 8th row 9 (9, 10, 11) times - 36 (38, 41, 44) between start of row and white marker. Work back to end of row. Next row, knit all stitches on needle, past marker to left edge of sleeve.

Lower Left Chevron
Repeat short row shaping above for left half of sleeve, making increases as for right half. [72, (76, 82, 88)sts) End by working back to outer edge of sleeve.

Next row (WS): With A knit. Then with B knit 2 rows.

Contrasting band
Next row (RS): Continuing with B, k2 sts, M1, work to 2 sts before center marker, k2tog, work to end of row. Next row (WS) P2 sts, M1, work to 2 sts before center marker, p2tog, work to end of row. Repeat these 2 rows 5 times. [NOTE: at this point there will be 36 (38, 41, 44) on either side of center marker]

Cap Shaping (Right Edge)
Next row (RS) With A bind off 8 sts at outer edge, work to 1 st before center marker, W&T. Next row (WS) Work back to start of row, binding off last st.

Continue in this manner, wrapping and turning 1 st further from the center marker each RS row and working back to the outer edge of the row AND AT SAME TIME bind off from outer edge 1 st every row 8 times, then 1 st every other row 8 times. Next row (RS) work across all sts to end of row.

Repeat cap shaping above for left edge. 36 (38, 41, 44 sts)

Upper Chevron
Next row (RS): slip all sts to the right of center plus the stitch marker to RH needle. W&T on first st past marker.
Next row (WS) Work to 1 st past marker, W&T.
Next row (RS) Work to 2 sts past marker, W&T
Next row (WS) Work to 2 sts past marker, W&T

Continue in this manner, working 1 st further away from center marker in each row until all sts have been worked in B. Finish with a WS row.

Cap Shaping (Top) Bind off 10 (7, 4, 2) sts at start of next 2 rows. Bind off rem 10 sts.
